2019 AFPF Spring Gathering
African Food and Peace Foundation held a Spring Gathering featuring a special screening of The Uganda Project - An award-winning feature documentary directed by Reint Bakema and Robert Fritz.
2017 Annual Dinner and Fundraiser
AFPF held its 2017 Annual Dinner and Fundraiser at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square, with a keynote address by Ugandan Chess champion Phiona Mutesi, and her mentor and coach Robert Katende of Som Chess Academy, a Ugandan nonprofit that empowers underprivileged youth through chess training and educational opportunities. Phiona and Robert both shared their inspiring stories of growing up in the Kampala slums to becoming champions for education and youth in Uganda.

Phiona and Robert, whose story is now the subject of the Disney motion picture, Queen of Katwe, had recently visited URDT and ARU to establish the latest Som Chess Center there on the campus. To learn more about the Chess Center, read our update on our Facebook page.

2017 Spring Open House

2016 Annual Dinner and Fundraiser
The 2016 Annual Dinner and Fundraiser was a great success! Thank you to all who came and contributed.
We heard from our guest speaker Her Excellency Oliver Wonekha, the Ugandan Ambassador to the United States.
“We have a lot of work to do. Women in Uganda are looking for opportunity, the opportunity to be able to overcome the cultural norms that foster discrimination against them," she said. "African Food and Peace Foundation is an amazing organization addressing those gaps to enable a woman or girl child in Uganda to take advantage of these opportunities and be able to enjoy empowerment and what it brings out.”

At our Spring Open House on April 12th, AFPF Executive Director, Julia Pettengill, and long-time AFPF supporter, Carolyn Pope spoke about their recent visits to the URDT and ARU campus. Through stories and images of students and alumni, Julia and Carolyn shared their powerful testimonies of the positive impact they witnessed. Thank you to all who made the evening a huge success!

2015 Annual Dinner and Fundraiser
The 2015 Annual Dinner and Fundraiser was a huge success! Thank you to all who came to celebrate another year of impact and find out what's next for our partnerships! We enjoyed a presentation from our keynote speakers from the MASS Design Group. Manager of East Africa Projects Kelly Doran shared with us highlights from his visit to Uganda and a preview of the campus Master Plan created with the African Rural University and URDT leadership.
We also premiered our new video, “Profiles of Impact.” Take a moment to enjoy three individuals tell their stories of how they uplifted themselves through their involvement with African Rural University and URDT.

URDT Leadership visits Boston

AFPF hosted Dr. Mwalimu Musheshe, co-founder and CEO of URDT, one of our partner programs. While in Boston, Dr. Musheshe attended the Harvard African Development Conference, where he served as a panelist for "Educating and Equipping Africa's Youth for Africa's Development." The panel discussed the challenges of training the 300 million African youths from ages 10-24 struggling to achieve literacy and basic job skills. He also delivered a lecture at Suffolk University emphasizing the role of early vocational training at all education levels, for both males and females. AFPF and the Dolben Family hosted an Open House during the last week of his visit, where the AFPF community was able to come together to meet the leadership from one of our partner programs.
2014 Annual Dinner and Fundraiser

Godliver Businge, an alumna of the URDT Vocational Institute, told of her journey from poverty in rural Uganda to being a Civil Engineer, breaking down gender stereotypes along the way. She credits Uganda Rural Development and Training (URDT) for empowering her. "Without URDT, I would not be who I am today." Godliver thanked the AFPF supporters for making this possible for her, and for so many others at URDT. It was an inspirational evening sharing Stories of Transformation.

Catherine Namwezi shares her story with kids

On Saturday, May 10th, friends and supporters joined us for a fabulous afternoon at Reasons to be Cheerful right here in West Concord. The inspirational Catherine Namwezi shared her powerful story of growing up in rural Uganda and her unique education at the URDT Girls School with children and parents from our local community.
